EATING TO YOUR HEART CONTENT: WHERE DID IT ALL START
Much of the current anti-cholesterol hype is founded on an outmoded 1950's era theory - a theory, you ought to know, that has been contradicted by the very studies most frequently cited in support. At one time, physicians and scientists viewed the deposits that accumulate in arteries as caused by too much cholesterol in the blood. Thus, many jumped to the impulsive
conclusion that this could only happen as the result of too much cholesterol in the diet. More thoughtful reviewers voiced their dissent, but were not well heard, though the famous Framingham study proved the 'cholesterol equals heart disease' notion wrong in 1970. So eminent an authority as Dr. Michael £. DeBakey, prominent cardiologist at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, reported in early 1977 that most heart patients he has operated on had "perfectly normal cholesterol levels."
An early critic of the over-emphasis on cholesterol, Dr. Edward R. Pinckney, editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association, a Life Fellow of the American College of Physicians, author of five books on medicine and more than 100 scientific articles and books for the medical profession, wrote one of the first editorials blasting cholesterol-blamers.
In his 1973 book, The Cholesterol Controversy, he stated categorically: "There is no scientific evidence to show-that a high blood cholesterol is the cause of heart disease or that lowering cholesterol - if such a thing is possible - will prevent heart troubles of any kind."
Almost twenty years later, there have been no new discoveries to refute him. Interviewed in 1987, he said: "I said it before, I say it today. The cholesterol controversy is a juggernaut based on no facts."
