EATING TO YOUR HEART CONTENT: TRIMMING MISCONCEPTIONS OUT OF YOUR DIET
According to a recent Gallup Poll, most Americans really DO want to get their diets on target. We are no longer strictly meat-and-potato eaters. Chicken and broccoli are just as popular as main dish ingredients these days. More than three-quarters of those questioned said they'd pay more for produce that was tested and certified as being pesticide-free; 25 percent said they'd pay double the normal price for such assurance.
Despite such stated good intentions, the American Journal of Public Health reports that on an average day, 40 percent of Americans go without fruit, 20 percent eat no vegetables, and more than 80 percent pass up whole-grain breads and high-fiber grains and cereals.
But Americans do pay close attention to food news. Most have heard that bran can help lower cholesterol levels, that organic produce is more healthful, and that salt-laden diets can lead to high blood pressure. Also, we take scary food news seriously. Almost 75% of the respondents say they start cutting down immediately on any food linked to a health risk.
Where do we fall down? Much as we'd like to eat smart, we don't know how. More than half of those surveyed mistakenly said that high cholesterol - not fat, additives or nutrient-stripped foods - is the biggest problem with the American diet Moreover, those who flunked this question believed they heard it from the Surgeon General.
We're also clogged with confusion when it comes to cholesterol. Two out of three erroneously said the way to go about lowering levels is to eat less cholesterol. Only one out of three understood they needed to reduce fat intake. Fewer still understood that high cholesterol levels are a symptom - not a cause - of disease.
Finally, we'd far rather cut back on simple staples - milk, meat, cheese - than give up rich desserts. Even those who suspect they ought to ditch the fat out of our diet, think they can do it without giving up cake, ice cream and similar treats.
