The latest news out of China is that many long-ignored trace minerals may be the key to longevity. Researchers at Nanjing Tie Dao Medical College gave a control group of 15 mice plain drinking water, and other groups drinking water supplemented with a different trace mineral in a concentration about five times that of normal tap water. They have reported striking results: manganese, copper, sodium and potassium supplements increased life spans by 84,77, 54 and 24 percent, respectively, while chloride, zinc and calcium decreased life spans by 58,41 and 20 percent. Obviously, what applies to mice may or may not apply to men. Even if it does hold true that some trace elements dramatically increase life while others shorten it.
Take care when self-medicating. Mineral supplementation is quite tricky, since the inter-relationships between the many trace elements is critical. For example, zinc - a popular supplement among oldsters eager to retard the progression of age-related macular degeneration - should never be taken without copper. As little as 50 mg. of zinc can impair copper absorption, and may result in anemia.
Unless you are a biochemist with a sophisticated understanding of your precise nutrient status, it is all too easy to throw vitamin co-factor systems and mineral utilization homeostasis out of synch. Avoid haphazard tinkering.
